April is Limb Loss Awareness Month, and we want to shine a spotlight on this amazing community of people. Although many of us associate the word “amputation” with the 91% of amputees living with surgical amputation, 9% of the limb different community in the US is made up of congenital amputees. Unlike surgical amputation, congenital limb loss is present at birth. In total, there are an estimated 2.1 million people in the US currently living with some form of limb difference. Recent statistics indicate this number will nearly double by 2050. Yet, despite their growing numbers, many individuals still have limited access to prosthetic devices. Obstacles can range from a distance; for many, the closest prosthetist can be several hours away, too expensive, insufficient health insurance, and inadequate research and development of devices for particular types of limb loss.
At Unlimited Tomorrow, we work toward fostering a future filled with smart and accessible prostheses. That is why we have made it our mission to deliver prostheses globally to enhance the quality of lives of amputees worldwide. Our goal is to ultimately drive innovation within the prosthetics industry at large. We continue to be inspired by those living with a limb difference whose spirit and determination is the motivation behind all we do!
Here are four amazing stories of individuals who have embraced their limb difference and, in doing so, have motivated the world to dream bigger, be braver, and never stop believing in yourself.
